Color Coding Elements

When my friend writes she likes to used highlighters to identify the different elements in a passage. So if she’s doing something descriptive, she’ll highlight with one color, words that refer to one of the senses and use another color for a different sense. Something visual may be one color. Something describing sound is another color. If she’s talking about a tree, she might write:

The wind sighs through the branches of the red maple tree bringing the scent of spring brushing against my face with the promise of warm weather to come.

We have sound, sight, smell and feel. We’re missing taste which might overdo it. This can also be used to identify conflict and other plot mechanics. I’ve forgotten how many colors she says she’s using – something like 16. Her writing is very rich and multi layered as a result of using this strategy. It’s a nice way to check what you’ve written to make sure you’ve included a full experience.
